This month we take you to St. Louis, Missouri and
introduce to some and present to others
Jewell & Converted.
Their 2006 recording is titled Live In St. Louis. This is their
freshman recording. But these ladies are certainly not new to the world of
gospel music.
This is another recording that took place in 2005, but
just made it to the marketplace over a year later. The recording actually
occurred in November 2005, at The Rhema Baptist Assembly Church. Although the
CD has a release date of November 28, 2006, it is just beginning to get the
attention in deserve in 2007.
The members of the group are Jewell Chesser, Bablen White,
Ni’Asia
Hatch, Sandra Thomas, and Lydia Jones. This is a well seasoned group of
singers. We were surprise to learn that they just began singing together in
2001. According to their bio, the group has incorporated “quartet and
contemporary gospel music’ to create their own unique style of signing. You
will readily recognize that their "Live" recording is rooted in traditional
gospel quartet music.
The recording begins with “Can’t Stop The Rain.”
Jewell Chesser sings lead on this song. She showcases her vocal versatility
with this song. It is obvious that she can span several octaves with her
voices. The background is very tight. This is a great song and wonderful way
to start the recording.
“Every Time I Feel The Spirit” begins with
almost an A cappella style, however, more and more instruments are added
to the song as it reaches the crescendo at the end. This is an outstanding
arrangement to a traditional gospel song. Bablen White is listed as the lead
singer for this song. But, the arrangement will have you feeling that an entire
choir is singing lead.
“Praise The Lord” will probably be
considered the ‘drive song.’ They ladies really are having a great time with
this song. Jewell really works this song. You can feel the energy that they
put into the song. You can also hear the audience response to the encouraging
words from the group to “get up out of your seat.” At six minutes and twenty
seconds, this is also one of the longest songs on the CD. And, it still seems
to end too soon.
The ladies slow things down with “I Need Thee.”
This is one song where three of the members are sharing lead duties, Jewell
Chesser, Lydia Jones and Ni’Asia Hatch. This song will certainly remind you of
The
Caravans.
The group is joined by The Rhema Voices of Rhema Baptist
Assembly Church on “Because He Lives.” This song should become
very popular with choirs. This song is followed by “A Place Beyond The Sky.”
Jewell also sings lead on this ballad.
On “Thank You,” you will think that
Evelyn Turrentine-Agee
is signing lead. Of course it is Jewell Chesser. The comparison to
Evelyn
is truly a compliment and shows the extraordinary vocal ability of Ms. Chesser.
This is another traditional song that has a great arrangement. If you are not
tapping your toes, stumping your feet and clapping your hand on this one, check
your pulse.
“If
I Had 10,000 Tongues”
is the closest the group gets in providing a contemporary song. This is
followed by “Trouble Don’t Last” and “Trust In God.” On “Trust
In God,” Jermell Rainer, one of the musicians, shares lead duties with
Ms. Chesser.
The final three tracks are “A Leak In This Building,”
“Do You Know Jesus,” and “I’ve Been Running.” Ms.
Chesser sings lead on each of these songs. “I’ve Been Running” is
upbeat and a great song to end the live recording.
This is an outstanding recording.
With their freshman CD being this good, one can only imagine how great their
sophomore project will be. The one disappointment about Live In St.
Louis is that there is no video of the recording. In spite of the
lack of a video, this project still deserves to be in your collection.
