Leomia Boyd
On Time
For the month of May we take a look at one of the best female vocalist in gospel quartet music today, Leomia Boyd. With over 11 prior recordings to her billing, the new project by Leomia Boyd titled On Time is worthy of all the accolades it is sure to garner. Ms. Boyd is certainly an accomplished singer. From the information on her website, she has been singing since the age of thirteen. She has been nominated for a Grammy Award.
On this new project, she moves through each song with such finesse and ease until you are left wanting more. It appears that a great deal of thought went into the selection of the songs for this project. In that, there is a common theme to each of the songs. The theme being, God is always on time and that God’s response to the situations you find yourself in is never late. In fact, it is always On Time.
In addition, the project was produced by Hi-LItes Music Ministry. Therefore, Daryl Henley and Doc McKenzie’s extraordinary talents can be heard throughout the entire project. Two of Ms. Boyd’s daughters and The Singing Angels of Sumter, South Carolina, are among the background singers on this project. Therefore, you will find the production and vocals on this project to be outstanding.
The project includes 10 selections with varying ranges in time from 3 minutes 8 seconds to almost 6 minutes in length. You will find a significant amount of ballads on this project. Seven of the ten songs were written by Ms. Boyd. The songs that were not written by Ms. Boyd are “Stranger In The City,” “Four Days Late,” and “Let Him In.” However, Ms. Boyd sings lead on all of the songs.
There are many songs of note on this project. The project beings with the very mellow ballad “No Failure.” This is followed by “I’m Yours.” It seems that there are a lot of songs being recorded today by gospel quartet singers that have the chords of popular songs from the seventies. Well, there are several songs on this project that have borrowed heavily from the songs of the seventies. “I’m Yours” will definitely remind you of a very popular singer of the seventies' era - Betty Wright. And the opening vocals on “Fire” will surely be familiar to those that are connoisseurs of the seventies’ music. The beginning chords on "Hold On" will remind you of the late Willie Banks and The Messengers.
Another song of note is Dorothy Lovecoat’s “Stranger in The City.” Ms. Boyd’s version of this song is nothing but exceptional. The delivery, arrangement and vocals presented in this song represent the best of traditional gospel quartet music.
“Let Him In” will probably be the song that gets the most airplay. It is certainly not Bishop Ronald Brown’s “Let Him In.” It is an upbeat song, but not quite a drive song. The song really has the feel of a song by Keith “Wonderboy” Johnson. It could easily have been recorded by Darrel McFadden & The Disciples or any of the other powerful gospel quartet gospel singers of today This is certainly a good song.
This project by Leomia Boyd is on the whole a great recording. It has something on it for everyone. Even choir singers will enjoy the music. We give Leomia Boyd’s On Time an 8 out of 10. This project is available everywhere so feel free to order it from your favorite on-line or local record store. Click on the title to hear "Let Him In."
