The Soul Seekers
The Soul Seekers
For the month of June we take a look at one of the most exciting “new” groups to hit the national charts in recent times. That group is none other than The Soul Seekers. There are numerous groups around the country with the name Soul Seekers. However, the group’s project that we reviewed this month will certainly leave you realizing that these guys are The Original Soul Seekers. The new self titled project is a live recording that is outstanding from the first track “I’ll Take Jesus” to the final track “You Oughta Been There.”
The Soul Seekers are eight young men that have apparently taken it upon themselves to ensure that gospel quartet music becomes part of the culture of the younger generation. The members of the group are Charlie Bereal, Craig Brockman, Teddy Campbell, Warryn Campbell, Gerald Haddon, Nisan Stewart, John "Jubu" Smith and Eric Seats. Each member brings a wealth of musical talent, including songwriting and producing to the group. The members have previously recorded with some of the top artists in the country.
They have uniquely combined the sound of traditional gospel quartet music with a modern day style. Although the group has only been together about five (5) years, they bring many more years of music industry experience to this project.
The CD begins with the upbeat “I’ll Take Jesus.” What a great song to begin this live recording. It sets the pace for the remainder of the CD. Other songs of note are “Somewhere Listening,” “Make A Way,” “I’ve Got It” and “Praisin’ My Lord/I Feel Good.”
“Somewhere Listening” is 9:38 in length. The guys have really taken this traditional song, that has been sung by so many groups, and made it their own. You have yet to hear anyone sing this song the way it is done by The Soul Seekers.
Harvey Watkins, Jr. joins the guys on “May A Way.” Immediately you will realize that this song may not have been recorded during the live recording. In fact it was not. We understand that it is a studio song that was added to the project. That fact does not impact the power of the words to this song. There is a very strong message of God making a way for us no matter what the situation. Paul Porter can be heard on “I’ve Got It.” This is a very slow song that is also over 9 minutes in length. It certainly has the signature sound and style of Paul Porter, including a testimony. It is a ballad that will definitely grow on you.
The song that you will find yourself playing over and over is “Praisin’ My Lord/I Feel Good.” It is difficult to say which song on this project will get the most airplay. However, we believe the best song on this project is “Praisin’ My Lord/I Feel Good.” This song will take you back to the early days of The Canton Spirituals. Although Harvey Watkins, Jr. does not appear on this song, you will think that it is being sung by The Canton Spirituals. The song is over 9 minutes in length, but it is such a great combination of two songs that end too soon.
On the whole The Soul Seekers self titled project is a power packed 10 song traditional gospel quartet celebration. The project is available everywhere so, if you have not purchased this project, head out to your local record store, or your online retailer and pick up your copy today. We give this live project by The Soul Seekers a 8.5 out of 10. Click on the title to hear “Make A Way.”
