Southern Soul Gospel
Memphis, Tennessee has given the gospel quartet community groups like George Dean and The Gospel Four, The Memphis Harmonizers, Rev Roney Strong and The Sensational Strong Family, and The Mighty Kings of Harmony. And who can forget the numerous artists that have made live recordings in Memphis; such as, The Canton Spirituals, Dottie Peoples and Lee Williams and The Spiritual QC’s.
Well there is another star on the horizon form Memphis, and that star is the Southern Sons. There new project is titled “Southern Soul Gospel.” This project is traditional gospel quartet music at its finest. Therefore, this month we review the Southern Sons’ "Southern Soul Gospel."
The group has been singing for over thirty years. This fact is reflected in the ease in which the group moves from ballads to mid-tempo to up-tempo songs. The group has the personnel to sing whatever they desire. The members are Bob Holloway, Wilbert Smith, Jr., Ben Singleton, Henry Hamilton, Robert Taylor and Sharrick Sanders.
As you listen to this CD you will readily realize that these guys have taken the best from gospel quartet groups of the past, and many of today's leading gospel quartet groups and merge those styles with a fresh, yet, traditionally rooted style. The instrumentation on all of the tracks compliments the singers exceptionally well. The lead singers and the background singers are definitely in sync throughout the project.
There are thirteen songs on this project - "Glad I Found Him," "I'm Going Home," "I Will Trust In The Lord," "It's Gonna Be Alright," "Come Out The Wilderness," "I'm Calling On You," "Just To Hear My Call, "Never Alone," "He Will Answer Prayer," "Whatever You Need," "Gonna Be Faithful," "View That Holy City" and "Have A Little Talk With Jesus." The Southern Sons really minister with each song. There are several that deserve special attention. The upbeat songs on this project are “Have A Little Talk With Jesus” and “He Will Answer Prayer.” Neither song may be considered a ‘drive song.’ But, they will have you tapping your feet and clapping your hands.
There are several songs that have been recorded by many. One particular song is “I Will Trust In The Lord.” This is one of the best songs on this project. However, when you put this CD into your player you will probably conclude that all the songs are good.
In the liner notes the group answers the question why they sing with the statement that “Singing Is Soul Satisfying.” Well, the songs on this project should be very satisfying to your soul.
On the whole this release from Southern Sons is a great traditional gospel quartet CD. We give the Southern Sons' “Southern Soul Gospel" an 8.5 out of 10. The project is available everywhere so, if you have not purchased this project, head to your local record store, or click on Southern Soul Gospel to purchase it online. Click on the title to hear “Glad I Found Him.”
