Lee Williams & The Spiritual QC's
Tell The Angels: Live In Memphis
This month's CD review is by the group that has continued to climb higher and higher in the gospel music industry. We speak of none other than Lee Williams & The Spiritual QC's of Tupelo, Mississippi. Besides having one of the greatest gospel projects of 2005, they are and have been the hottest gospel quartet group in the country for at least the past five (5) years. Their new release Tell The Angels: Live In Memphis became a best seller even before it was in the marketplace.
This project was one of the most highly anticipated releases of 2005. In addition, MCG put this project on the fast tract and brought it to the marketplace in about 100 days from the time it was recorded. The recording actually took place on April 9, 2005, in Memphis, Tennessee. As with Good Time and Right On Time, Tell The Angels: Live In Memphis was recorded during a live performance at Temple of Deliverance Church of God in Christ, where Bishop G. E. Patterson is the Pastor.
This release makes up for any deficiencies or reduction in production that was present with the Right On Time release. That is not to say that Right On Time was not a good project, it just was not in the same league with Good Time. Well, Tell The Angels: Live In Memphis is definitely in the same league as Good Time.
This project, like all of The QCs previous releases, offers a little something different while still retaining the well known Spiritual QC's style. Lee is at his best. Once again, he pushes himself to the limits on ever song on which he sings lead.
This project also, as did Right On Time, includes lead singing from second lead singer Leonard Shumpert and The QC's drummer, Patrick Hollis. Patrick really shows the breadth and depth of his vocal talents with the song Wave My Hand. Obviously, this song has been recorded by many singers, but Patrick really puts his heart into this song and makes it his own. And the background singing on this song is very tight. Sit back and enjoy an excellent remake of a song that is a staple in gospel music.
Shumpert sings lead on Its About Time and Glad To Be Here. Both are sure to become favorites among the groups fans. The arrangement to Glad To Be Here is a little bluesy, but it does not take anything away from the song. You will really appreciate the tight harmony of the background singers.
Lee opens the live recording with Whom Shall I Fear. Look for choirs across the country to begin singing this song on a regular basis with the arrangement used by The QCs. Lee never gives you less than his best, and the vocal on this song is no different. He is at his best. And the background is just awesome. Jesus Rose and Call Him Jesus" are two additional songs that should become favorites with choirs. Make no mistake about it, the songs are solidly quartet, but the arrangements are such that they could easily be adapted to be sung by a choir.
Tell The Angels and Lord Im Willing will probably be the songs that get the most air play. Both songs are awesome. The arrangement to Lord Im Willing is just superb. They are both vintage Spiritual QCs. The guys are at their best on these songs. There are twelve (12) songs on this project. It is difficult to find any weaknesses with this project. It begins with Whom Shall I Fear and ends with the very soothing On May Way. Be careful, On My Way just might have you in tears. It is a powerful song.
If you buy only one gospel quartet CD this month, this is the one to buy. We give Tell The Angels: Live In Memphis by Lee Williams & The Spiritual QC's a 10 out of 10. Click Tell The Angels: Live In Memphis to purchase the CD. Click on Lord Im Willing to hear this particular song.
