The Bolton Brothers

Revival In Atlanta

For this the month of September we take a look at the newest project from the group that is know throughout the gospel community as Gospel's Best Kept secret. That group is none other than The Bolton Brothers of McClain, Mississippi. Though these brothers have been ministering for many years they first took the country by storm with their 1996 release entitled "Live In Mobile I". Falling right in line with the production and vocal excellence that this first nationally released project reveled, the brothers show with this new release they are more than capable of doing it again.

For those who have had the opportunity to see these preachin' brothers in concert "Live" you know that you will receive more than singing and shouting. This new project aptly titled "Revival In Atlanta" gives you an opportunity to hear these preachers havin' church. From the jumpin' first selection to the last you are treated to an all out worship experience. For those who are fans of the choirtet (combining of choir and quartet) concept than you will also be surprised with the Bolton's ability to work with choirs with the same precision as with a group.

While this project is an all around winner there are some selections that stand out as potential hits on the horizon. From the start the Bolton's open with mid tempo driving selection "Come & Go To That Land". This classic Soul Stirrer selection is given new spice with a stabbing drumbeat and almost all of the Brothers taking a stab at lead vocals. As the selection really starts to take form Rev. James Bolton and Rev. L.W. Bolton lead the group into a spicy change up that is sure to have you clapping and singing along. While listening to this project it is defiantly easy to notice that the Bolton's have expanded their style to new horizons. While their first release focused specifically on traditional quartet selections this project makes full use of choirs and borderline contemporary arrangements. Song such as "Come Out of Your Mess", and "Oh How I Love You" showcase the brothers in a never before seen light. While I am definitely a fan of their strictly quartet selections I do have to say in there experimentation's they sound like old pros of the style.

Those fond of their strictly traditional sound are by no means left wanting on this project. "To See Jesus" is truly a hit waiting to take the country. This song has all the same elements as their previous hit "If You Move I'll Fall". Rev. James Bolton is allowed all the room needed to express his love for the Lord through his patented vocal improvisations and flights into falsetto. While the major standout songs on this project are slow to mid-tempo ballads there are some real house reckin' drive songs. On a whole this project is very powerful. As a true quartet man my only complaint would have to be the excessive use of choirs on almost half of selections. I give The Bolton Brothers "Revival In Atlanta" an 8.5 out of 10.
