The Christianaires
Thank You
For this the month of August we take a look at the newest project from one of quartet gospel's legendary groups. Though they are viewed as newcomers to the quartet scene that is by no means the case. For well over 20 years the Christianaires have spread the gospel in song. From their early days at AIR records the group has come a long way. Always on the cutting edge of the quartet sound these house wreckers have produced another hit in "Thank You". Through sickness and pain lead singer Paul Porter seems to gain vocal power as time goes on.
For those who have consistently followed the Christianaires music throughout the years this traditional/contemporary project comes as no surprise. It is a known fact that Paul Porter is at his best when he is able to stretch his wings and dabble in different styles. This new offering from the Sontag, Mississippi based group is much closer in style to their 1997 "Saints Hold On" release. While there are some straight up contemporary selections the project on the whole has a traditional tone. Complete with those patented rises and falls where Paul really let's lose this project is absolutely a must have.
I will tell you straight out ever song on this CD is noteworthy and Hit material. As always the production is crisp and clear evident of master producer Paul Porters influence. The CD opens with the rockin "Let God Fix It". Paul Porter makes a true statement to God's goodness with his conviction and spirit filled vocals on every dip and run. The background is clean and really powerful. "Lift Up Your Hands" allows Porter to really let loose. This slow ballad is very similar in style to the groups hit "Ain't No Way I Can Loose". "Another Day" is a bluesy powerhouse. Porter testifies so hard that your throat is raw just listening to him. Just to let you know these are just the first three selections on the project. Surprisingly enough after many listens some of the contemporary sounding selections will grow on even the deepest traditionalist. Take it from me, a hard core traditionalist.
Guests on this project include J. Moss and Ramiah on the praise selection "Look To Jesus". Also, we can't forget the vocal duel between long time friends Paul Porter and Melvin Williams. This selection is classic Christianaire material with a deep bass line and plenty of Paul Porter weaving in and out of his powerful background. For those who remember Christianaire member Charles Porter from his early days with the Blind Boys of Alabama you will be glad to know he takes the helm on a selection. In fact the project closes with the quartet standard "He's Using Me" with Charles on lead. This new arrangement of a classic really shows the group's versatility and creative ability. On a whole this project is outstanding. However, if you don't like a lot of instrumentation or Contemporary styles this one is might not be for you. I give The Christinaires "Thank You" a 9 out of 10.
