Eddie Jackson & The Harmony Echoes
Comfort Me
When most people think of the Canton Spirituals you usually think of the great Harvey Watkins Jr. His spirited lead voice has anchored the group for many years and continues to carry them to new heights. However, for those that followed the Canton Spirituals well before their national breakout hit "Live In Memphis I" you will remember the Cantons had 4 powerful lead voices. In fact, many of the vocal techniques that have become synonymous with Harvey Watkins Jr. were honed from listening to his predecessor Mr. Eddie Jackson. During the 1970s the Canton Spiritual lead vocalists consisted of Eddie Jackson, Charles Nichols, Harvey Watkins Sr. and Harvey Jr. Now Eddie Jackson along with his new group The Harmony Echoes has captured the well loved Canton Spiritual sound and presented it in a brand new CD release entitled "Comfort Me". Produced by Harvey Watkins Jr. this project includes some of the best musicians and guest background vocals from past and current Canton Spiritual members.
Have you ever picked up a CD and literally loved every single song on the disc? Well, if this has never happened to you then you must hear this new release from 17 year Canton Spiritual veteran Eddie Jackson. So who is Eddie Jackson? For those Canton Spiritual fans all I really have to say is "Pearly Gates". Watch your Canton Spirituals Live Experience 99 video and you will see Mr. Jackson working out with The Original Canton Spirituals. For another look at Mr. Jackson in action watch the Canton Spirituals "Live In Memphis I" video and look to your far left on the background with the Original Cantons on "Certainly Lord".
Now let's talk a moment about the CD. What makes this release so great? Enlisting the help of Harvey Watkins Jr. and a host of well known musicians this project literally screams for attention. Here is a little look at the Musicans that worked on this project: Terell Gatlin (Williams Brothers), Dwight Gordon (Williams Brothers), Harvey Watkins Jr. (Canton Spirituals), Merlin Lucious (Canton Spirituals), Billy Voss (Williams Brothers/Cantons). Talk about an All-star cast of musicians!! In terms of vocals this project takes you back to the good old days of the Canton Spirituals. Yes, friends the whispered background sound and smooth harmony is in order on this project. Songs like the CD opener "Stand Sill" will remind you of the group's ability to wreck houses even with mid-tempo numbers. Songs like the bluesy "Down Here In Your Care", and the rockin' "Waiting On Jesus To Fix It" revive some hit numbers that Mr. Jackson recorded with the Cantons on J&B records. All that can be said about these new versions of classic Canton numbers is WOW!!
With such a project as this I really can't even begin to mention songs of note. The entire project is a winner and get's my stamp of approval.
