Endurance
A Few More Miles
In a market that is constantly inundated by new releases it is very seldom that a group's sound really jumps out and screams "I AM DIFFERENT". Though this is usually the rule of thumb this is not the case with Endurance out of Houston, Texas. The group's sound is quartet but it is a quartet sound that shows great versatility and depth. Not to mention their lead vocalist Michael Robertson sounds exactly like Joe Ligon of the Mighty Clouds of Joy. Besides the versatility and great sound quality on this CD we have to mention that this is not your ordinary Independent release. SCCME Records shows through this 2002 release that they are in the business of putting out a quality and visually appealing product.
As was mentioned earlier Endurance is not just your regular weekend area quartet. Their versatility is expressed through selections like the high octane cut "I'm Ready" and the R&B influenced groove "To God In Prayer". Tightly weaved background vocals make for a great listening experience on both cuts. On the whole though this project is what I would call semi-traditional. While you won't find the thumping drive numbers of the Keynotes or the Jubes you will find smooth tight harmony and a variety of arrangements ranging from ballads to mid-tempo grooves. For instance, the title cut "A Few More Miles" is what one might call Motown Gospel at it's best. A bulrush of killer harmony falls upon your ears as you listen to the cool collected leadership of Earl Sampson. His lead on this song is only strengthened by the beautiful arrangement perfectly suited for his range.
When we speak of range the name that comes to mind is that of the group's main lead vocalist Michael Robertson. As was mentioned above this gentleman has a voice that sounds almost exactly like Joe Ligon of the Mighty Clouds of Joy. It would be enough to say this, but Robertson's talents go a step further as he shows his true range on the title cut towards the end of the song. The note he hits would even cause Paul Beasley to turn his head with disbelief. While the group does not really have a real heavy drive number their up-tempo songs include "Come See About Me" and "Do Right". Both selections are lead by Michael Robertson allowing him to really stretch his vocal cords with a few Joe Ligon sounding screams and squalls.
On the whole Endurance's project is a great chance to have some variety in your quartet collection. I give Endurance "A Few More Miles" a 8.5 out of 10. To get a better feel for the group be sure to visit their website at www.musicbyendurance.com . You may also listen to cuts from the album.
