She is hailed as “ The Queen of Gospel Quartet” and has come to be known and loved for her friendly smile, humble attitude and her genuine spirit of love for God, His ways, and His people. She is honored with the titles “Lady of Light” and “God’s Woman”. EVELYN TURRENTINE-AGEE, IS BACK WITH A “FRESH” ANOINTING!!! Many industry contemporaries now affectionately refer to her as “Mama Evelyn” or “Mother Evelyn”. Whichever title you prefer, you’ll find that this outstanding pillar in traditional gospel music has made another gigantic leap in her music career from major record labels to independence.
If you loved her signature project “God Did It”, Evelyn Turrentine-Agee’s newly released project, Double Exposure, will rock your spirit, excite your soul and cause you to rejoice in and for God’s goodness to us. This traditional double CD set is power packed with music you’ve come to expect from Evelyn: foot-stompin’, toe-tappin’, hand-clappin’, soul-stirrin’, churchin’ traditional gospel music. As Evelyn says: It’s “just gospel.” It includes good ‘ole Sunday morning church music as well as music styling that has brought Evelyn to be known as the Queen of Quartet.
The journey to this point has been long and some times tedious but Evelyn is determined to “stay the course”. This Gospel Queen has had to endure through many hardships on her journey of life and profession but has maintained her steadfast faith and sustained and increased her anointing. She remains a mainstay in this competitive business of gospel recording industry. She has endured through hurts and major disappointments in the industry while dealing with major challenges and struggles in her personal life; her illness, a stroke in 1997; her husband’s alcoholism until his deliverance in 1993 when he was pronounced dead in a construction accident but survived; a son’s captivity to the world until God saved him and called him to preach; her baby becoming ill and almost dying at the age of six months old; the death of a beloved younger brother who died while in prison; assisting with the care of her mother who is stricken with alzheimers disease; the prolonged illness and ultimate death of her “daddy” who she adored; and much more. Through all of this she continues to declare in praise on this project’s new single release God’s Been Good, and she admonishes her audience to Trust Him.
In her music Evelyn shares her testimonies because as she states: “So many people are ‘going through’. It is my hope and prayer that my testimonies will meet someone right where they are and let them know that they are not the only one going through, and that our hope is in Jesus Christ who promised to never leave us nor forsake us. I want to encourage the listener that I can relate to their pain, their fears, their struggles and challenges because I’ve been there. But the message is: I made it with the help, mercy and grace of God. I want to encourage them to hold on, they can make it. We’ve got to ‘go through to get to where God wants us to be’. God brought me through and he’ll do the same for you.”
Today, this St. Louis native (currently residing in Detroit) is healthy, singing and evangelizing filling over a hundred engagements per year including concerts, revivals, conferences, festivals, etc.
Evelyn recorded albums on major labels: Go Through – Light Records; It’s Already Done – AIR Gospel; God Did It Live – The Testimonies – Worldwide Gospel; God Did It – WOS Records; In God’s Own Time – CGI Records, and now Double Exposure. We’ve also seen her on compilation albums including the Gospel Legends and Tributes to James Cleveland as well as others. In addition, she appeared as guest soloist on other well-known artists’ projects.
Evelyn was honored as a 2007 International Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Museum inductee. She is the recipient of numerous industry awards and nominations including Stellar, Lady of Soul, Gospel Insider, BMI Performing Rights, American Gospel Quartet Convention and others. Despite other accolades, this phenomenal woman does not hesitate to tell you that her greatest reward and favor from God is to be “mama” to 11 children and 50+ grand-children. Whenever you ask Evelyn how she achieved and maintained in any area of her life she states simply: “I didn’t, God Did It and” she declares, “He’s still doing it”.
