The Sons Of The Soul Revivers
I'm A New Creature

This months review takes us back to a project that was recorded over three (3) years ago. In November 2001 we introduced you to the live recording of The Sons Of the Soul Revivers, Im A New Creature. A review of the songs can be found in our Quartet CD Review section.
We decided to revisit this project because it represents one of the best live recordings of a traditional gospel quartet group. The video does not have the best lighting. The stage is somewhat crowded. And, at times, it is very difficult to distinguish those in the audience. So you may ask, then how is this one of the best live recordings of a gospel quartet group? Fair question.
The answer lies in the songs chosen for the project and the energy the group puts into each song. If you are looking for a straight up hard hitting gospel quartet video this is the one. From the first song, Come Over Here, to the last song What A Mighty God these guys are at their best. This video is a mixture of The Mighty Clouds of Joy, Live In Charleston, The Gospel Keynotes, Country Boy Goes Home I and II, The Cantons Memphis I and II and The Singing Disciples Live In Baltimore. The songs on the video (and the performance of each) are just that good. The Sons of The Soul Revivers are indeed a traditional gospel quartet group. And make no mistake about it, traditional gospel quartet music is what you get on this video. Although, the video has been in the marketplace over three (3) years, the video still has a "freshness" to it. You will think that it is a recent recording. This is probably attributable to the fact that good gospel quartet music is never a fad. It never grows old.
Listening to the CD you get the idea that these guys definitely are singing with the anointing. Being able to see the service on video you also recognize that these guys are really enjoying themselves and are truly ministering to the audience. Lead singer, James Morgan, moves from song to song without skipping a beat and the energy in the place kept the audience engaged in what was happening on the stage.
The performance of all of the songs is powerful. But, what The Sons of The Soul Revivers do with Im A New Creature is just awesome. There are many recordings by quartet gospel groups and some have great songs on them. However, very few measure up to The Son of The Soul Revivers song Im A New Creature. You will find yourself watching this video over and over just because of this song. After giving you about 6 minutes of this song, the screen goes black and The Sons are back with a reprise. WOW!
Also, being able to see the musicians and the singers interact adds another dimension to the project. The musicians also sing backup and do so with just as much energy as they display in the playing of the various instruments. Seeing Dwayne Morgan take over the microphone on Joy When I think About It will have you on the edge of your seat, if not up stomping your feet. Enlisting the help of gospel broadcaster K. D. Bowe, Dwayne really goes to work on this song. Just to be able to see K. D. Bowe interact with The Sons on this song is just as remarkable.
The quality of the sound is great. There are no highs or lows in the sound quality. The recording level is consistent throughout the video. There are no interviews on this project, just singing from the beginning to the end.
Even with the lighting and crowded stage flaws, this is still a great project. If you like good hard hitting gospel quartet music than you must add this video from The Sons of Soul Revivers to your collection. We give this video an 8.5 out of 10. The video may be hard to find. The video was a product of Alpha 7 Ministries, Inc. Therefore, it may be available from Alpha 7 Ministries, 888-391-6900.
