The Memphis Harmonizers

Catch on Fire - Live!

From Memphis, TN

In 2004 we announced that The Memphis Harmonizers had completed a “live” recording and that it was expected to be in the marketplace in January 2005.  Since that time, there have been many changes in the street date for the project.  However, after months of high anticipation, the project was finally released in September 2005.  Therefore, this month we review The Memphis Harmonizers’ new video titled “Catch On Fire – Live!  From Memphis, TN."

This project not only features The Memphis Harmonizers, but also Clay Graham and Cleve Graham share lead duties on the title track – "Catch on Fire."  Also, Rev. Roney Strong of The Strong Family also shares lead duties on one of the track.  Although, part of the title is From Memphis, TN, the project was actually recorded at Greater Love Ministries, Southaven, Mississippi.

James Chambers served as the Master of Ceremonies for the recording, and he really put a lot of energy into his introduction of the group.  Some may remember Mr. Chambers from videos of The Canton Spirituals.  Speaking of the Cantons, their former drummer, Michael Richardson, is the percussionist on this project.

Probably because the recording was at a church and not an auditorium, the stage at times seems congested.  The lighting is okay.  There are many close-ups of the members of the group and musicians.  Several shots of the audience were dark, blurred or fuzzy.  The audience participation does not flow as smoothly as you might expect.  However, the crowd really got with the group during the singing of “Catch on Fire.”  It seems that Clay and Cleve were ready to take the song to another level when all of a sudden it comes to an end.

You will notice that the song seems to end just as the group was in the middle of the hard drive.  In fact several of the songs seem to end too soon.  But, this should not discourage you from purchasing the video.  To have a video of The Memphis Harmonizers with Clay Graham, Cleve Graham and Rev. Roney Strong on it is worth the purchase price.  In addition to these outstanding quarteters, The New Bethel M. B. C. Choir is also feature on this project.

The quality of the sound is good.  There are no highs or lows in the sound level.  It is consistent throughout the video.  You will realize, however, that at times the vocals are not actually in sync with the singers’ lip movements.  This is not an uncommon occurrence in many videos.  But, because of the many close-up shots of the singers, it will seem to be more prevalent on this project.

There are many interviews on this project.  The interviews not only give you the opportunity to meet the guys close-up, but they provide many nuggets about themselves and the group that you many be learning for the first time.

An added bonus is the concept video of “Catch on Fire.”  You will find yourself playing this portion of the video over and over.  The setting is just right for the song.  The way the group moves into the drive part of the song is just outstanding.  The weaving of Clay and Cleve into the concept video will have you clapping your hand and rocking in your seat.  The concept video alone is also worth the price of this video.  It is just that good.

Overall this is a good video.  The concept video portion of this recording is worthy of a 10 out of 10.  However, overall we give the video The Memphis Harmonizers' "Catch on Fire - Live! From Memphis, TN" an 8.5 out of 10.  To purchase your copy contact Twin Towers Entertainment.
