Every now and then it is good to go
back and take a look at earlier gospel videos. Well, this month we did and
decided to review the video
Willie Banks and The Messengers
In Concert.
This video was part of the MALACO's Night of Gospel Legends' series. The
video, like the others in the series, was recorded in Jackson,
Mississippi. For any fan of quartet gospel music, these videos are
probably already in your collection. If they are not, you want to get
your copies before they become collectibles.
On this particular video there are eight songs - For The Wrong Ive Done,
No Tomorrow, Hear Me When I Call, Battlefield,
If Its Alright, Things I Cant Change, Gods
Goodness, and God Is Still In Charge. The video is
only about 40 minutes in length. But, what a great 40 minutes! The group
is at their best on each song. The video could have easily been titled
the Best of Willie Banks
and The Messengers. And,
for gospel music history buffs, you will really appreciate the interview at the end of the
video.
The quality of the sound is great. There are no highs or lows in the sound
quality. The recording level is consistent throughout the video. The lighting
is also great. You can clearly see the entire group, with no blind spots. In
addition, the close-ups of the groups members are one of the best. And also,
you can actually see the audience. They seemed to have really been enjoying
themselves.
The interview at the end of the video is a great lesson in gospel quartet
history. For instance, did you know that Banks sang with
The Sensational Nightingales,
The Swanee Quintet,
The Flying Clouds
of Detroit, Michigan, was an original member of
The Violinaires,
and that he began singing at the age of five (5) with his mother? Did you
know that he joined his first quartet gospel group at the age of thirteen (13)?
What about the fact that he actually sang back-up to
Madame Edna Gallmon Cooke?
And, if you get the video you will also learn the names of the original members
of Willie Banks and The
Messengers.
Of course, Banks was also a member of
The Jackson Southernaires.
Once he left The Jackson
Southernaires, in 1974,
he formed Willie Banks
and The Messengers.
If you like good hard hitting gospel quartet music than you must add this
video, Live In Concert, from The Legendary
Willie Banks and The Messengers
to your collection. The history lesson alone is worth the price of the video.
We give this video a 10 out of 10. To purchase your copy of this video
