Often when assessing a project by a
group that has not recorded for some time, we will say that the group is
back. Well, to some that may imply that the group went away for a while.
That is not the case with
The Canton Spirituals.
The guys may have not recorded a full project since
New Life: Live In Harvey, IL, but they
have still been ministering at concerts across the country. So, as an
intro for their new CD, we will just say that
The Canton Spirituals
have a new CD that epitomizes the best of
The Canton Spirituals
and what fans of this group expect.
The new CD is titled Driven. Most dictionaries define
driven as having a particular thing as a principal cause. Before
listening to any of the songs on this CD, read the liner notes and you will
conclude that Harvey and the guys had a principal cause in mind when the
project was conceived and recorded. According to the liner notes, Harvey
was driven by the Holy Spirit because He planted the gift of music in [him].
Driven by [their] fans that didnt throw [the group] away with continued
support. Driven by [the] Radio Angels & retailers worldwide waiting with
much anticipation [for] a sprit-filled CD.
Here is another perspective on the title. It is not a surprise that the
cover of the CD has the guys standing in front of an automobile. Often we
get to enjoy CDs while we are driving to and from work or to other
destinations. Many find that quality time in the car is the ideal time to
listen to good music, mediate, reflect, and pray. So, each of us can
relate to the word DRIVEN. It may not mean completing a CD, but most of
us are DRIVEN in some way to a principal cause. And, it is safe to say
this CD may not make it out of many vehicles.
The Canton Spirituals
have indeed done it again.
The guys have delivered an outstanding gospel CD. With such tremendous
desire to accomplish the principal cause, no one could produce this CD but
Harvey Watkins, Jr. Stan Jones was the co-producer. With the
talents of these two (2) exceptional producers, this CD could not be anything
but GOOD.
Now to the songs. The first track takes you down memory lane in a unique way.
Imagine trying to find that perfect
Canton
song on the radio. You move the dial (or punch the seek button) and as you do,
you get a few seconds of a song and static. With this intro you get a
sampling of "Satisfied," "Glad Ive Got Jesus," "Clean
Up" and "I Made It." All popular songs by
The Cantons
from previous recordings.
The first full song on the CD is "That Man." We were
waiting to hear Harvey say Im taking you back to 1993 and 1995. This
song has all of the trappings that one would expect from
The Cantons
- great lyrics, outstanding arrangement, strong vocals, and a powerful message.
If this does not remind you of
The Cantons
from Memphis I and II, nothing else will. Listen as the
background singers so amply compliment Harvey lead vocals.
"Call Jesus" is the next track. Harvey calls on the
incomparable Lee Williams to share lead duties on this track. Harvey and
Lee interact so well until you are left wondering why they have not recorded
together more often.
Other tracks on this CD are "These Eyes," "I Need You,"
"Get Aboard," "I Never Met A Man," "I
Recommend Jesus," "Put God First," "Peace,"
"Leave My Burden (St. Louis)," "Watch Him Move,"
and "I Got Him On My Mind." "Get Aboard"
is a rework of the song "Gospel Train". This ballad is sure
to become a favorite among
Cantons fans.
The Cantons
have brought a unique arrangement to this traditional (yet very popular) gospel
song.
Another song of note is "I Recommend Jesus." The opening
chord to this song will have you reminiscing about gospel quartet music of the
60s and early 70s. This song will also remind you of the early years of
The Cantons.
The CD closes with a word of thanks from each member of the group.
It should also be noted that "Get Aboard" was written by Paul
Porter. Stan Jones penned "Peace" and "Watch Him Move".
Victor Allen wrote "Put God First." All of the remaining
songs were written by Harvey Watkins, Jr.
This release from The
Canton Spirituals
is a very good project. In fact, it just might be the best they have
released since Memphis II. You will definitely want to add this one to your
collection.
