It is always a joy to receive music from unknown groups. Often you find a jewel among the CDs. And, we have found one.
Therefore, for this month we take you to Pine Bluff, Arkansas and introduce to
some and present to others
Marla & The Boyz. Their 2007
freshman recording is titled Psalms.
This group consists of Ms. Marla Barnes and her two (2) sons, Zachariah and
Charles. At the time of the recording Charles was 16 and Zachariah was 9
years old. As stated in the group’s bio, “Charles is an excellent drummer
and Zachariah has been blessed with musical talents [that is demonstrated in his
ability] to play the piano, organ, and drums. Zachariah is also a gifted
composer and music writer.”
In 2003 the Marla and the boys started singing as a trio around their community
under the name Momma and the Boys. In September of 2006 Zachariah wrote
and composed his first song “Heaven is the place”. While
preparing to record their first CD, the decision was made to change the name of
the group to
Marla & The Boyz.
The recording begins with “Unity.” This song was written and
composed by Ms. Barnes and Zachariah. It is based on Psalm 133. This
ballad is a great introduction to this group. In this one song you get to
experience their vocal talents, their ability to compose and Zachariah’ rapping.
This is a great song and a wonderful way to start the recording.
“Trust” is based upon Psalm 31. This is a great musical
interpretation of Psalm 31. The song reminds us that all we have to do is
Trust God. The background harmony is tight. In addition, this one
could be classified as 'easy listening.' It is obvious that Ms. Barnes is
at her best when signing a ballad. And "Trust" is reflective of that fact.
“Songs From Psalms” is described as a medley of Psalms. Psalms 27
and 33 are the anchors for this song. However, references to other Psalms
and be heard throughout the song. You
can feel the energy that the group puts into the song. They seem to be
enjoying singing this song. By the way, this song was also
written and composed by Ms. Barnes and Zachariah.
“Hear My Prayer” is based upon Psalm 102. The background
harmony is one of the best on this song. This is followed by "Praise Ye The
Lord." The entire Psalm 117 is incorporated into this song. The group has
put together a great arrangement for this Psalm. It is truly a praise and
worship song. Great song.
As stated above, young Zachariah wrote "Heaven Is The Place."
Which, by the way, was the title to one of his school assignment from which he
responded to the subject “If I had a choice to make a change. . . “ he would
change the world to Heaven. Think about it, a young man (less than 10
years old) had the foresight to realize this world would be a better place if it
was like Heaven. This also suggest that Ms. Barnes have rooted her
children in the Word of God. This song alone is the reason why you should
obtain a copy of this CD.
“Amazing Grace” is the next song. The group has taken this
traditional song that has been record by just about everyone that has recorded
in the past 50 years and turned it into a ballad that you are sure to enjoy.
The arrangement is awesome. Ms. Barnes, Charles and Zachariah are featured
on this song.
The final song on the CD is “That’s How Much I Love You.” At
six minutes and sixteen seconds, this is the longest song on the CD. And, it
still seems to end too soon.
Although there are only eight (8) songs on this CD, it is still worthy of
being in your collection.
We give
