There are some groups that just keep
putting out good gospel music.
Larnell Starkey & The Spiritual Seven Gospel Singers
are one of those groups. Each recording has taken this group to a higher
level in ministry and in the gospel music industry. Therefore, for the
month of July, we have selected for review their new release titled The
Best of The Old & New of Larnell Starkey & The Spiritual Seven Gospel Singers.
One of the reasons this group delivers each time is the longevity of its
members. The group has been in existence for over forty (40) years.
Larnell Starkey, an original member, is the lead singer. Walter Starkey,
an original member, is lead guitarist, bass player and baritone vocal.
Coleman Wright, an original member, is tenor, baritone vocal and bus driver for
the group. Danny Starkey, an original member, sings first tenor. Tim
Starkey, a member for 26 years, is bass vocalist and percussionist. Eric
Starkey, a member for 26 years, sings first & second tenor. He also is the
bass player for the group.
The youngest members of the group are Travis Starkey, who plays lead guitar and
Otario Starkey, who also plays lead guitar. They have been with the group
7 and 6 years respectively. And, by looking at the sir name of the
members, one would deduce that they are family members. In fact, according
to the liner notes the group consist of “four original members and the other are
brothers, sons and grandsons.”
Obviously, longevity has allowed this group to ’jell’ to the point that they
move through each song like clockwork. They are indeed smooth. They
have all of the trappings of
The Gospel Keynotes,
The Mighty Clouds of Joy,
The Fantastic Violinaires,
The Harmonizing Four, The Soul Stirrers
and any of the other groups that represent the best in gospel music. The
vocals will also remind you of many of the Rhythm and Blues group of the
seventies. No, they have not in anyway deviated from their roots.
They are a traditional gospel quartet group. But, what they have done is taken
the best from the other genre, meshed it with the best of many of the legendary
groups in gospel music, combined it all together with their extraordinary vocal
and musical talents and delivered an exceptional CD. But, more importantly
the CD will minister to you.
The CD has something on it for everyone that enjoys gospel music. The
songs on this project are "I Can't Stop Praising God,"
"How Could I Ever
Stray Away,"
"God's Got It,"
"Walk Around
Heaven," "You
Can't Turn Me Around,"
You've Done Enough,"
"Gossiping,"
"God Is In
Control," "Do
Lord," "Lord
If You Send Me,"
"I'll Be
Listening,"
"I've Been Blessed,"
"Thank You
Jesus," and
"Let Your Light
Shine."
It is difficult to select any one particular song to highlight. There are
many that deserve airplay. There are the Public Domain songs, the
previously recorded traditional songs, and the new songs. There are songs
that will have you tapping your feet, clapping your hands and just joining the
group in singing praises to our Lord and Savior. There are songs that will
encourage you and songs that will put a smile on your face. There are
songs that choirs will be singing and those that soloist and other groups will
try to master. It is safe to say, each person listening to this CD may
find a different song that will cause them to play this CD over and over.
The selections are just that varied and the recording is just that good.
Overall this is a great project and should be in your collection. You will not be
disappointed. If you like traditional gospel quartet music this CD is one
that will
only endear you more to the genre. You will find yourself recommending
this CD to others. We give The Best of The Old & New of
Larnell Starkey & The
Spiritual Seven Gospel Singers a
9 out of 10. Click
