Destiny

The Jackson Southernaires is one of the groups that consistently deliver good gospel quartet music.  They have been at it for about seventy (70) years.  So, it is no surprise that their most recent project, Destiny, would be a favorite of gospel quartet fans everywhere.

One of the first things you will notice from the CD cover is that there is a new member of the group.
Rev. R. L. Bush joins Huey Williams, Maurice Surrell, and James Burks on this project. Rev. Bush is no stranger to gospel music.  Many will remember Rev. Bush from The Flint Cavaliers.  He has also sung with Doc McKenzie and The Gospel Hi-Lites.  A few years ago, he was lead singer for his own group, Rev. R. L. Bush & The New Swansilvertones.  They recorded Live and Up Close, which did exceptionally well on the airways.  He has recently formed a new group, Rev. R. L. Bush and Brand-Nu.  Their new release should be in the marketplace the first quarter of 2010.

Rev. Bush does add a new dimension to the vocals of
The Jackson Southernaires.  However, make no mistake about it, the signature and unique vocals of Huey Williams are still the trademark sound of the group.  When it comes to lead singers, no one does it better than Huey Williams.

There are twelve (12) songs on this project. It would not do justice to this project to single out any one (or two) songs. Each will minister to you. And, they all are done in that vintage Jackson Southernaires’ style. Huey and Rev. Bush share lead duties on “Thank You,” and “Don't Want To Be Lost.” Rev. Bush handles lead duties on “I’m Your Child.” Huey performs lead on “Covered Me,” “He'll Make A Way,” “One Friend,” “Message To Your People,” “Reality,” “All I Need,” “Hard To Get Along,” “Keeping It Real,” and “My Kind Of Christmas.”  Fans of the group will readily recognize that many of the songs have been previously released.  A few years ago, the group did a project titled Reality.  At least four of the songs are from that project.

As usual Huey shows just why he is one of the great lead singers of all times.  His ability to effectively sing slow heart wrenching ballads to hard driving songs are all showcased on this project. You would think that with almost seventy (70) years of singing, his voice would reflect some wear and tear. Well, it doesn’t.  In fact Huey’s extraordinary vocals are just as strong as ever.

In addition to the powerful lead singers, this project also showcases some of the best background harmony we have heard in a long time.  And, no review of this project would be complete without mentioning the astonishing group of musicians. Those contributing to this project were Castro Coleman, Cornelius Moore, Stan Jones, Derrick Lee, Ralph Lofton, Tommie Avant, Todd Vaughn, Pharis Evans, and Derrick Horne.  With that lineup, you expect to hear a great recording.  And, they do not disappoint.

This latest release from the legendary Jackson Southernaires is a powerful collection of quartet material. You will like this recording more and more every time you listen to it. If you love good quartet singing this project is a must for your collection.

We give  Destiny an 8.5 out of 10.  To purchase this CD click Here.  Click on the title to hear “I'm Your Child."
