One of the challenges for any gospel
quartet group is being able to survive the passing of their point man.
History suggests moving forward is easier said than done. Many groups,
some at the top of their popularity, have faltered after their lead singer (or
otherwise point man) dies. Accordingly, it was with much anticipation that
The Supreme Angels
recorded their first project since the passing of their point man
Rev. Howard “Slim” Hunt.
The new project is titled Reloaded. The adjective ‘loaded’
suggests being “equipped with an abundance of options” or “staffed with
excellent players.” Therefore, one can deduce from the title of the CD
that it is about letting the world know that the group has been re-equipped with
an abundance of options and that they have re-staffed themselves with excellent
singers and musicians.
The options in this instance mean the talent of the members of the group. The
group did not have to ‘re-staff’ themselves, since all of the current members
were part of The Supreme
Angels before the passing
of Slim.
The members of the group for this recording were Quincy King, Robert “Sugar”
Hightower, Michael Kimpson and Maurice Robinson. And, they are talented.
The members are singers, songwriters and musicians – an abundance of options.
All songs on this project were written by members of the group. The arrangement
to the Public Domain song, "I Need Thee" was done by the entire
group.
The musicians for this project were Joshua Woods and Maurice Robinson (drums),
Michael Kimpson (bass guitar), the Legendary Sugar Hightower (guitars), and
Quincy King (piano Organ & Keyboards) – an abundance of options. These
guys are some of the best musicians on the road today. They bring
exceptional musical talent to this recording. In addition, for the
Reloaded project, they have not tried to change the sound or style of
The Supreme Angels.
They have adjusted quite well and are positioned to keep the group and their
music around for generations upon generations.
The first song on the CD, “Wicked Land,” is a great bridge for the
current group. It is a bridge from the old group to the current line-up, in
that, Quincy sounds like a young version of Slim. So when you put the CD
in your player, the first song let you know immediately that you are listening
to The Supreme Angels.
Quincy also sings lead on “Jesus Reached Out His Hand For Me,” and
“He Moved.” Maurice takes over lead duties on “Hold On
And Never Give Up,” “If It Had Not Been For The Lord On My Side,”
“How Long,” “Don’t Let The Devil Steal Your Joy,”
and “What’s The Matter With Jesus.” Michael sings lead on “No
More Than You Can Bear,” and “Your Touch Is All We Need.”
Sugar Hightower does lead on “Tell Jesus All About It.” The guys
share lead duties on “I Need Thee.”
Except for “I Need Thee,” the CD consists of all new songs – an
abundance of options. So, with this CD you have new songs done in the
style (traditional gospel quartet) fans expect from this group.
This latest release
from The Supreme Angels
is a great collection of gospel quartet material. You will love this recording
more and more every time you listen to it. We give
The Supreme Angels’
Reloaded a 9 out of 10. To purchase this project click "Reloaded." Click on the title to hear
