For the month of July we take a
look at a CD from 4 Winds Records that some may view as a compilation project.
The CD is (God Is God) He Won’t Change by
Darrell Luster And Friends.
Lately Darrell Luster
and 4 Winds Records have been very busy. Several months ago 4 Winds released
projects on The Golden
Wings Quartet of Tupelo,
Mississippi, The
Christian Angels,
Castro Coleman & Highly Favored,
and The Alabama Boys.
Now the label has released new projects on
Rev. F. C. Barnes & Company,
Spencer Taylor & The
Highway QC’s and
The Messengers.
Fans of this genre and of Southern Gospel know that Luster is one of the lead
signers for The
Sensational Nightingales.
He is also a producer and his signature style and vocals are clearly stamped on
several of the recent release by 4 Winds Records referenced above.
The Friends’ CD features
Rev. F. C. Barnes
on the title track "(God Is God) He Won’t Change." Also,
featured on the Friends’ project are Jerome Williams (of
The Evereadys)
on “Nothing Shall Separate Me From His Love,”
Evelyn Turrentine-Agee
& Ben Cone III & Worship on “My God’s Got It,” Darrell Luster, II
and Darrian Luster on “I Just Want To Say Thank You Lord,”
Fredericka Faison & Ben Cone III & Worship on “All Things Work Together
For Good” and The Legend, Spencer Taylor, on “It
Won’t Last.”
There is a moving medley tribute to the late Margaret Allison. Also, a song
from the last project recorded by Ms. Allison, "Don’t Let Him Catch You
With Your Work Undone." And, we learn from the intro to this
song, that The Angelics
were one of the first group to record songs written by Mr. Luster.
The project actually begins with Luster’s moving acknowledgement of what it was
like when he first started singing professionally – for he “hadn’t been born
again.” Every gospel signer should take heed to this song. If you are “singing
one thing and living another” this song will have you reflecting on your walk
with our Lord and Savior.
Luster really showcases his ability to handle ballads with "I Can Do
Nothing Without You." We must admit, the first time we heard this
song, we immediately thought of singers like
Johnny Taylor,
Brook Benton,
Ben E. King,
Teddy Pendergrass,
Al Green
and other great balladeers of that era. The words to the song will have
you mediating on the just how good God has been to you. The song is over 5
minutes and 30 seconds in length, and yet it still seems to short. Awesome
song!
There is a moving tribute to gospel music legends with the song "The Real
Pioneers." For the quartet gospel enthusiast, the song would probably
be more meaningful if several of the legends were named in it; similar to what
The Jackson Southernaires
did with "Anniversary."
After listening to the entire CD, we think you will agree that the
Darrell Luster And Friends
ranks among the top 5 quartet gospel projects released thus far this year. On
the whole Darrell Luster
And Friends’ (God
Is God) He Won’t Change is a power packed 13 song traditional gospel
quartet celebration.
The project is available everywhere
so, if you have not purchased this project, head out to your local record store

Friends’ (God Is God) He Won’t Change a solid 9 out of 10. Click on the title
