This month’s review takes us to
Chicago, Illinois, for a closer look at the CD He’s All I Need by
The Gospel
Crusaders. This group was formed in 1988 by Tommy Patrick and Quentin Williams.
Currently, the group consists of Rev. Leon Walker, Kevin Lloyd, Michael Wilson,
and Tommy Patrick.
The group refers to themselves as “a quartet with a twist of contemporary.” We
beg to differ; the group is all quartet - traditional to the core. They have
released several recordings and each further solidifies the group as one of the
‘up and coming’ members of this genre.
This latest installment is on the independent record label Frizzel Corporation
Music Group and features 12 power packed selections. From the outset it is
apparent that gospel superstar producer Ray Braswell, Jr., has a great amount of
involvement with the project. At the same time, Mr. Braswell allowed the group’s
originality to shine through the project.
So what makes this a good project? First and
foremost these gentlemen are truly anointed. The sincerity and pure
anointing power flows through each and every song. This project is very close to
that traditional sound of quartet gospel you hear at concerts around the country
every weekend. That is one reason why we have concluded that this group is
“traditional to the core. The classic formula of one balladeer on lead
vocals is certainly in place in this group. And, to top it off, they have
two (2) great lead singers. Not only are the lead singers featured, but the
background harmony is tight.
As usual, there are many songs of note on this project. The songs that makes
this a ‘must have’ CD are "Make It To That City,” "Been So
Good,” “Few More Day,” and “Prayer Will.”
These songs are delivered with smooth background harmony, strong lead and just
the right instrumentation. More importantly, they will minister to the listener.
Listen closely to Bible based “Prayer Will.” The guys have
also put together a "Medley" that deserves your attention. It begins with
an A Cappella version of "I'm On My Way" and ends
with a 'bluesy' "Hush, Somebody's Calling My Name."
It is also worth noting the unique arrangement to the “The Last Mile.”
The guys have combined the lyrics from numerous songs to deliver song that
should be a favorite at concerts. No this is not The Last Mile Of The Way by The
Soul Stirrers. However, as you listen to it, you will immediately identify songs
from which the lyrics are derived. Although not a hard drive song, it is one
that should get Radio Angels’ attention.
There are no hard drive songs on this project. The
ballads are some of the best recorded by a quartet gospel group in sometime.
Maybe, just maybe, the trademark of this group is – the ballads. With each, you
are able to focus on the words to the songs. The group does venture into some
mid-tempo songs. And, with the smooth vocals of the powerful lead singers, the
group showcases their tight background harmony. The musicians do not overshadow
the singers. The group’s emphasis is definitely on praising God and encouraging
their fellowman.
On a whole this project is very powerful and definitely deserves the attention
of quartet enthusiasts. You certainly want to add this CD to your collection.
You should be able to find this CD by contacting the group. We give
The Gospel Crusaders’
He's All I Need an 8.5 out of 10. Click on the
