Lil' Ricky & The
Mighty Golden Stars
We Need The Lord
This month we take a look at
the recent release from
Lil' Ricky & The Mighty Golden
Stars. Their new CD
is titled We Need The Lord.
The Mighty Golden
Stars are a family
group from Bennettsville, SC. The members are four brothers Lil Ricky
McDuffie, Laytron McDuffie, Rodney McDuffie, and James McDuffie Jr.; and
two sisters Sharmekia McDuffie, and Marsharika Quick. The members have
been signing gospel music ever since they were old enough to memorize
lyrics. Each of the singers can sing lead and they all share in
providing background vocals. Members of the group are also songwriters.
The musicians are also members of the McDuffie family. They are the
cousins of the singers - Brian Dukes, Alfonso Bouie, Anthony Brown,
Preston Teal, Yascha Williams, Timonthy Cook, and Timothy Cook. Overall,
this is a group full of talented personnel.
In 2005, they released their first CD titled I’m On My Way To Heaven.
That CD introduced the group to promoters all over the country. And,
the popularity of the CD allowed the group to travel and perform in many
states. The new CD should bring the group new fans and many more
appearances.
There are twelve songs on the We Need The Lord project.
They are "I'm On My Way To Heaven," "I've Been Born
Again," "He'll Make It Alright," "He's All I
Need," "Jesus Will Take Care of You," "The
Lord Will Make A Way," "I tried Jesus," "We
Need the Lord," "For All You've Done," "Need
Him Now," "We All Got To Leave Here," and "Jesus
Is On the Main Line."
While the project as a whole is very powerful, no one song will stand out.
That does not mean, however, that there are no selections worthy of your
attention. In fact, there are some songs on the project that are
literally one step away from being nationwide hits. What it does mean, is
that there is a good selection of songs on the CD. There are some really
down home quartet songs on the project. There are also selections that may
be considered drive songs.
The project opens with an mid-tempo
selection that is sang in a much more traditional style when the group is seen
"Live." In fact, while the CD is somewhat representative of the group's
style and sound one can really only appreciate this group at a "Live" concert.
Speaking of “Live,” there is the song "I Tried Jesus" that has a
‘concert’ feel to it. There appears to be an audience (at the recording) in the
background. And, the lead singer references the crowd as he starts the
song with “ya’ll come on put your hands together.”
Unlike many independent projects where the problem lies in production, that is
not the situation with this CD. Overall the production is outstanding. Whenever,
the instruments do not overshadow the singers, you know a lot of thought was put
into the production.
If you are looking for a project
that is traditional quartet gospel from a young 'up and coming' group, then this
CD is for you. With a spirit of humbleness this group is well on their way in
the quartet gospel industry.
On the whole this release from
Lil' Ricky & The Mighty Golden
Stars is a good project. We give
Lil' Ricky & The Mighty Golden
Stars' We Need The
Lord a very solid 8.5 out of 10. You may not be able to find the CD in
your local music store. However, it can be ordered online by clicking
