For the month of May
we take a look at the newest project from one of gospel music's
legendary groups,
The Mighty Clouds of Joy.
When it comes to traditional gospel quartet music, no one does it better than
The Mighty Clouds of Joy.
After all, they have been singing praises to our Lord and Savior for over 50
years. If there is any one active group that can be considered a trend setter,
it is
The Mighty Clouds of Joy.
They are the standard by which other groups in gospel music are often measured.
Their new CD is titled At The Revival. And, what a revival
you will have while playing this CD. This is one of those CDs that will be
hard to take out of the player.
The Clouds begin
with Joe Ligon asking the question Did you "Stop To Praise God"
this morning? After all, every morning is a good morning when you "Stop
To Praise God." The arrangement to this song sets the pace for the
remainder of the CD. You know
The Clouds
are setting you up for a great time. By the way, Roy Tyler of
Roy Tyler & New Directions
is credited with having penned this song.
Next,
The Clouds
move into the title track "At The Revival." Joe sets
up the listener with a 50 seconds colloquy about his Grandfather going through
the community and announcing that they were about to have Big Meeting.
This one is in the style of "Meeting Tonight." The
arrangement and background are awesome. By the time you get to the end of
this song you will have a mental picture of that old time revival, including the
mourners bench. Roy Tyler also is credited with contributing to the writing of
this song .
There are 10 songs on this CD. The others are I'll Be Up There,
Hard Times, I Love You Lord, He'll Fix It
for You, Jesus Kind of Man, Just Love Somebody,
Walk Around Heaven, and We Will Overcome.
Although each are not being highlighted in his review, they are all worthy of
your attention. We must, however, comment further regarding Walk Around
Heaven.
The Late Michael Cook is the featured lead singer on Walk Around Heaven.
One constant in
The Clouds concerts
was Michael Cook singer Walk Around Heaven, which always caused
us to reminisce and reflect on Paul Beasley years with The Clouds.
It never occurred to us, until the release of At The Revival, that Mr. Cook had
never recorded this song with the Clouds. Having the live recording by Mr. Cook
of Walk Around Heaven will, in years to come, make this CD a
collectors item. What is probably Mr. Cook's last recording, "Hard
Times," with him singing lead with
The Clouds
is also on this project.
Though times and styles have changed The Mighty Clouds of Joy have always
remained consistent in their delivery of the best in quartet gospel music. In
addition, they remain in the forefront of the changes. This project is nothing
short of outstanding. It should not surprise anyone if this CD garners
another Grammy Awards for
The Clouds.
You certainly will want to add this CD to your collection. You should be able to
purchase this CD at your local record store. You can also purchase the CD online
by clicking on
At The Revival.
We give
The Mighty Clouds of Joy's
At The Revival a 9.5
out of 10. Click on the title to hear A
Jesus Kind Of Man."
