A group that should
be mentioned in the same breath as
Lee Williams & The Spiritual QC’s,
The Jackson Southernaires,
Doc McKenzie & The Hi-Lites,
The Williams Brothers
and
The Mighty Clouds of Joy
is
The Southern Sons
of Memphis.
The Sons
should be in everyone’s top ten of “best gospel quartet
groups” on the road today. There new CD is titled Another Dimension › Live. And, is the subject of this review.
There are some groups that are just professional in everything that they do. The
Southern Sons embodies everything one would desire from a national recording
artist. They are down to earth. When they are on a program you will see them
rejoicing in other groups’ ministering before it is their time to take the
stage. They love to minister in song to the people. And, the “Sons”
always “let their light shine.”
So what is so great about this new offering from
The Sons? Well,
for one thing, the guys sound as smooth as ever. Listening to the harmony will
definitely have you reminiscing about earlier projects from this group and
reflecting on some of the other great gospel quartet groups. One reason why
these guys connect so well with their ministering to others is that they have
been together for many years. They have been ministering through gospel music
for more than 20 years.
The Sons
“love to sing and minister. Paradoxically, ministry is the most important
part of their mission. They are committed to uplifting and exalting the name of
Jesus, to encourage, renew, and revitalize the faith of Christians by bringing a
message of hope and love.”
As with any project, there are those songs that will really jump at you. This
project has a few that I'm sure fans will love. For starters, there are songs
that will give you that down-home feel, God Is Good To Me. There is an
extraordinary ballad "Calling On You" taken from their
Southern
Soul Gospel CD. Another song that is certain to make the CD ‘a must have”
is “Lord Have Mercy.” This song serves as a great capstone for
this project. It would not be a surprise for this one to become a favorite with
choirs as a great Praise and Worship song.
Other songs of note include "Lord We Need You." This is defiantly
one of those songs that you will hit repeat on. For those looking for a little
bluesy feel the Sons deliver with "Going Home To Jesus." When it
comes to a hand clappin' number the Sons’ " Lord I Need Your Help"
is the one.
The new project was
recorded at Brown Missionary Baptist Church, Southaven, Mississippi.
However, the only thing on the project that provides any indication that this is
a live recording is the incomparable James Cambers' introduction of the group at
the beginning of the last song, “I Need The Lord.”
It is clear that
The Sons
are a group committed to their song ministry and that is exactly what you
will get in every selection on this CD. If you love quartet harmonies.
If you like songs with messages. If you like to hear clearly the words
being sung. This CD for you.
We give
The
Southern Sons'
Another Dimension > Live a 9
out of 10. Click on the title to hear “Lord
We Need You."
