The Chosen Sons

Something Good For Everyone
This month’s spotlight is on the group The Chosen Sons of Lusby Maryland. Their new release is “Something Good For Everyone.” The title of the project clearly reflects what is contained on the CD. There is something on this project for anyone interested in good gospel music.
The project begins with the very raw sounding upbeat “Overflow.” The song speaks of the overflow of joy, love and peace in our lives after the acceptance of the Holy Spirit. The guys put a lot of energy into the entire 4 minutes and 34 seconds of this song.
A song that has been recorded many, many times is “Yes, Jesus Loves Me.” It is a very familiar song and one that many learn at an early age. Each artist or group that records this song tries to bring their own personality and their unique style to the song. They try to make the song their own. Unfortunately, many do not succeed in bringing any creativity to their delivery of this song. Well, The Chosen Sons have crossed that bridge. They definitely make this song their own. Their arrangement is unique and very inspiring. Rooted in traditional gospel quartet music, the guys will have you singing with them as they render their version of this classic.
The group’s recording of “God’s Unchanging Hand” has the feel of a recording from the sixties. It will remind you of many of the great gospel quartet groups of the sixties. There is very little instrumentation, which further contributes to the sound of the sixties.
The song “On The Throne” is probably directed toward what is considered today the hip-hop generation. There is much “rapping” in this song. True gospel quartet enthusiasts will not like this song. However, if the song gets those of the hip-hop generation to listen to the entire project, then it is worthy of being on the project. “On The Throne” is not the longest song on the project, but it is about five minutes in length.
"He’s Able" and “All The Way” are the praise and worship songs on the project. The arrangement to each of these songs is one that choirs well appreciate. These ballads also showcase the group's ability to harmonize. The background vocals are very tight on both songs.
“You’re The Reason” is another ballad. This is a great song. It will also take you back to the seventies. The song has a rhythm and blues feel to it. That does not deter from the message the song is conveying. This is one of the best songs on the project. “I Found Out” brings you back to the sound of today. It is not contemporary in style, but those that like contemporary gospel music could very well be drawn to this song. It is a mix of traditional and contemporary.
The drive song is “It’s Gonna' Be Alright.” This one will get you moving. The lead singer really “works” this song. The background vocals are tight. The runs are vintage hard hitting traditional gospel quartet. This is probably the song that will get the most airplay. And, it is certainly worthy of being in heavy rotation on every gospel quartet broadcast. It would be exciting to have this song recorded live and on a DVD.
There are good songs on this project. The more we listen to the project, the more appreciation we have for the project. It certainly has ‘something for everyone’ on it. Fans of gospel quartet music will definitely want to add this project to their collection.
