During the 1920s and 1930s many blind country blues guitarist/shouters
recorded gospel music, including Washington Philips, Blind Willie Johnson, Blind
Joe Taggart, and Rev. Gary Davis.
Thurman Ruth leader of the Selah Jubilee Singers, was the first promoter to
bring major gospel artists to the famed Apollo Theatre in Harlem.
