2003: Marvin Sanders of the Mighty Golden Bells Raleigh, NC dies in Raleigh, NC.

 

2006: Ricky Dimming of Michael Carter and 2nd Generation died in Shreveport, LA.

 

2010: Wayne "Puddin" Lamonte Davis, who played drums for The Fantastic Violinaires and The Pilgrim Jubilees, died in Rocky Mount, NC.

 

2015: George Dickens, Jr., of George Dickens and the Gospel Disciples, died in Tarboro, NC.

 

One of the earliest successful gospel groups was the Mitchell Christian Singers of Kinston, North Carolina. They were formed in the early 1930s by James B. Long, who produced their earliest recordings. In 1938, the group performed in the Spirituals to Swing Concert with Benny Goodman, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and the Golden Gate Quartet.

 

The Dixie Hummingbirds were inducted into the Gospel Music Association (GMA) Gospel Music Hall of Fame on February 2, 2009, in Nashville, TN.  Members of the Birds present for the induction ceremony were Lyndon Baines Jones, Carlton Lewis, William Bright and Torrey Nettles. Sundray Tucker, the daughter of deceased Inductee Ira Tucker, was also present.
