This month we take a look at the
video from Quartet Boyz Records. The video is titled Quartet Boyz Records
Presents LIVE In Central Louisiana. Dwight Gordon is the man behind this
project. Many will know Dwight because of his longevity in the gospel music
industry. He has played guitar for some of the best of the best in the gospel
music arena. He brings those years of experience, and his extraordinary
talents, to this project.
There were five (5) groups that took part in this recording. It is a video that
gives you performances by some groups that are unknown to many and at least two
(2) groups that many will be immediately recognizes. Those taking part in this recording were
The Holy Sons,
Chuck and The Guiding Clouds,
Gifted,
The Concert Supremes,
and
Lil Blair and The Violinaires.
The recording took place on
February 23, 2008, at Zion Hill Baptist Church, Pineville, Louisiana, where the
Rev. Joshua Joy Dora is the Pastor. The emcees for the program were
Darrell Hobdy, Kevin Fontenot, and Easton Shelvin
The video begins with
Dwight Gordon’s
Tribute To The Troops. Dwight, dressed in military fatigues,
gives an inspiring version of the "Star Spangled Banner."
He is accompanied by the
Sweet Singing Souls.
The tribute shows why Dwight is in such demand by artists across the country.
He lets his guitar speak to the world on this song.
The Holy Sons
The Holy Sons
contribution to the taping consists of "Too Close" and "Touch
Me." This group has great potential. First, they have more
than one lead singers. These guys know how to harmonize. The
background singers really compliment the lead. You get the impression
that they guys wanted to ‘move’ but were limited by the space on stage.
Chuck and The Guiding Clouds
They began with "My Mind Is Made Up," followed by "After
All These Years," "Help Me To Be Strong," and "Love
You Lord." They have a great lead singer. This group just
needs some new and original material. The professionalism showed by this
group on stage is exceptional; particularly, for a group that is trying to
showcase their talents in a live recording. For instance, the lead singer
actually enunciates the words to each song. You get the impression that
these guys want to minister to you. They want you to not just feel good,
they want to leave a ‘Word’ with you. And, they do in this video.
Gifted
Gifted,
from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, began with "I’ve learned," followed
by "Crown of Life," and "God Is Worthy."
These young men are full of energy and a hunger to sing. They are truly
gifted. If this is the future of gospel quartet music, then the future is
in good hands. Given the right opportunity, this group will make some
waves in the gospel music industry.
The Concert Supremes
They moved the audience with "Blessing Me," followed by "Did
it All For Me," "Down On My Knees," "Hymns,"
and "Clean Up All My Wrong." It is obvious that these guys
are seasoned. Their stage presence embodies all that you would expect
from a gospel quartet group. This is a talented group. From the
singers to the musicians, this group is ready for primetime. They know
how to read the crowd. And, they know how to plant a Word (through
song) that the audience can take with them. Watch and listen closely to "Hymns
(I Need Thee, Amazing Grace, Father I Stretch My Hands To Thee).
"
Lil Blair and The Violinaires
Titus Stallworth is the point man for this group. He toured with
Robert Blair and The Fantastic
Violinaires. It
was the late Robert Blair that gave him the title Lil Blair. His
voice, and stage presence, will immediately remind you of the late Robert
Blair. They did songs previously recorded by
Robert Blair and The Fantastic
Violinaires,
The Violinaires
and
The Fantastic Violinaires.
The songs were "Children Are You Ready," "Three Pictures,"
"Violinaires Medley (Come To Far To Turn Around, All Be Over After While,
Dr. Jesus)" and "Old Time Religion."
The facilities used for this live recording provided for close encounters between the musicians, singers and
the audience. The lighting could have been better, but because of close
up of the groups and very little variation in camera angles you have great
shots of the singers. There was no scanning of the audience. For the most
part the audience was in the dark. The sound system was very good.
There is very little variation in the sound levels.
The video presents groups that may not make it on the national scene.
It also presents to the world a good sampling of gospel music from groups in
Louisiana. Just in case some of these groups never make another video, you will certainly want to have this video in your collection.
This is a part of gospel music history that all should embrace. Once this
video is out of print, you will regret not owning a copy.
It is important to note that, the strength of this video is that you get to see
groups that you may not be familiar with and it captures a live recording by
some that may never make it on another video.
