We would like to thank the promoters for sharing their insight into promoting gospel quartet programs. The articles are very enlightening. The articles should give all groups a better understanding of the significant investments by promoters that are necessary in order to present you (the gospel quartet singer/group) in person to your fans.  Remember, the investment is not just monetary.  As stated before, promoters sacrifice time with their family, their health, their reputation and so much more in order to do what they believe they are called to do.  So, once again, to all Promoters of Gospel Quartet concerts and programs we say THANK YOU.

The next article is written by Evangelist Loretta Coleman.  Ms. Coleman is very candid in her comments.  This is an excellent article that shows the ups and down of putting together gospel quartet concerts.  This is one of the articles that should give you a deep (or at least a better) appreciation for Promoters.  Click here to read the article.

The Christian Souls new release is titled Anointed Experience "Live In Jeffersonville, IN."   The project was recorded at Indiana Baptist Church, 1501 Locust, Jeffersonville, IN.  This is an excellent project.  It is just one of several good projects that have recently been released by groups with ties to the state of Indiana.

Now, it keeping with the theme of this being a month of thanksgiving, we want to do something a little different and give thanks to some unsung warriors in the effort to keep gospel quartet music alive.  And, those warriors are The Gospel Promoters.  No matter what you may think about people that promote gospel quartet music, they are indeed worthy of being shown deep appreciation.  After all, it is the gospel quartet promoter that is responsible for bringing the group and gospel quartet singers to their area.  Often time, we fail to recognize that that play such an integral part in keeping this music alive.  If not for the gospel promoter must groups would only, if at all, be heard on your local radio station.  You would certainly not be able to see them in person in your area.  So, to the gospel quartet promoters who sacrifice so much (money, time, reputation, health, family and more) to keep the groups on the road busy and to give relatively unknown groups a chance, we say THANK YOU.

We have asked promoters from around the country to give you their perspective on what it takes to be a promoter.  So, during this month you will find articles from various promoters addressing various aspects of promoting.  The articles are intend to be insightful, useful and informative.  By the end of this month, we hope that you will have developed a deeper appreciation for the Promoters.  We also hope that by the end of the month, you will have found reasons to uplift the promoters instead of denigrating those that bring groups (know and unknown) to your communities.

The first article is written by Kenneth Robinson II, President of The Musbo Company.  Click here to read the article.

November is upon us. This is the month that most begin to get ready for “The Holiday Session.” This is also the month we celebrate Thanksgiving. Have you ever actually read the initial Proclamation that started the Thanksgiving tradition?  Well, if not we encourage you to do so.  You will find words encouraging giving PRAISE to our God.  You will also find Thanksgiving described as “a day of solemn THANKSGIVING to GOD for all his mercies. . .”  So, as you celebrate Thanksgiving Day this year make sure that you give God the praise.

If you like a cappella 'style' music, you must get a copy of the first traditional gospel quartet release from Field Recorders' Collective.  Their new release is on The Dixie Hummingbirds and The Little Wonders.  We stress the word 'style.'¯  Because, although both group used a guitar on the tracks, the recordings will remind you of music from the a cappella era of the 40's and 50's.  The recordings are from the collection of Brandywine Friends of Old Time Music.  There are eighteen (18) tracks on this CD.

As we enter the last quartet of the year, it is good to reflect on the fact that the first nine months have been very active for the gospel music genre.  In spite of the lower than anticipated turnout at many gospel quartet concerts this year, it has still been a good nine months.  Look at the number of new gospel quartet CDs and videos that have made it to the marketplace this year.  It has been a very active nine (9) months.

We received numerous emails inquiring whether Rev. R. L. Bush, of Rev. R. L. Bush and The New Swansilevertones, was now with The Jackson Southernaires.  We went to the most reliable source, the group, and was informed that Rev. R. L. Bush is currently singing with The Jackson Southernaires.  Yes, that's right, Rev. R. L. Bush can now be seen (and heard) with The Jackson Southernaires.  With the addition of Rev. R. L. Spencer Taylor and The Highway QC's have added a new singer.  Shiloh Brown, formerly of Darrell McFadden and The Disciples is now with Spencer Taylor and The Highway QC's.  Some may remember Shiloh's powerful rendition of Swing Low Sweet Chariot on Darrell McFadden and The Disciples' Chronicles: Book of Songs Vol. I "“ III.  He can also be heard on Refuge on that same project.  The Highway QC's are staying busy.  When we spoke to Spencer III, they had just finished a very successful weekend tour.  In addition, they, along with Lee Williams and The Spiritual QC's and The Canton Spirituals, just taped the Bobby Jones show.  The show should air in the Fall of this year.

The Highway QC's are on their way to the GMWA.  They will be performing at the GMWA on Wednesday and Thursday.  Other groups scheduled to perform include The Disciples, The Jackson Southernaires, The Gospel Four, The Turner Brothers, The Luckett Brothers, and The Caravans.  For more information on who will be performing at the GMWA visit the QC Message Board.

Call your local radio station.  Fewer radio stations are playing any significant amount of gospel quartet music.  Even stations that play nothing but gospel music seem to focus on genres other than gospel quartet.  To encourage stations to play more gospel quartet music, we would like for the fans of this music to call their local station and request your favorite gospel quartet singer and the song you would like to hear.  Then get your friends, family members and other fans of this music to do the same.  It would be important for as many people as possible to call and request the same song.

We are also asking gospel quartet groups (and singers) to announce from the stage that they want their fans to call their local radio station and request their music. This has to be done regularly.  Once, is not enough.  Every time you stand before an audience, ask them to call their local radio station and request to hear your song on the radio.  And, tell those present what song to request.  If this is done, it just might get radio stations to start playing more gospel quartet music.  It is worth the effort.

It has certainly been an active first six (6) months of 2007 for gospel quartet music.  Just take a look at the News Archive for some of the events, releases and activities that occurred from January to June.  The next six (6) months will probably be just as active.  There are new releases that will hit the marketplace each month between now and the end of the year.  Expect releases form Low Rush Music in July.  Also, The Singing Disciples (of Baltimore, MD) will make their return to the airways with a new CD that will be released on July 24, 2007.  They are now The Disciples and the new release is titled Change. This new release is on the Priesthood Recording Company (PRC) label.

The final independent label we take a look at for the month of June 2007 is NuSound.  This label is the brainchild of Melvin Couch.  Mr. Couch serves as President and CEO of the label.  According to their mission statement, NuSound is “dedicated to preserving the music, memory and traditions of those who have come before us in creating Gospel Music.”  In addition the label “is dedicated to the recording and distribution of traditional Gospel Music, both by the legends of the past and the new stars of tomorrow who both recognize and preserve the spirit of their predecessors with a fresh and contemporary approach in their music.”

The label’s catalog include artist like Doc McKenzie and The Hi-Lites, The Brooklyn Allstars, Lil Blair and The Violinaries, Robert Blair and The Fantastic Violinaires, and The Uplifters. NuSound has put together some of the best gospel music compilation CDs and videos to ever hit the marketplace.  The compilation includes every genre of gospel music with an emphasis of Gospel Quartet music.  Along with the artists/groups already mentioned, the compilations also include The Five Blind Boys of Mississippi, The Legendary Soul Stirrers, Slim and The Supreme Angels, and many more. If you are looking for some of the best recordings in gospel quartet music visit NuSound.

On the May 2007 Radio Broadcast we featured a song by The Thankful Quartette.  Notice the spelling of “quartet.”  We received an email from Ms. Jacqueline Vann of Augusta, Georgia, inquiring about how to obtain a copy of any recordings by this group.  After a lengthy conversation with Ms. Vann, who is the historian for the Thankful Baptist Church in Augusta, we learned that the group came out of Thankful Baptist Church.  The initial members of the group were Tenor – Joe Scott, Sr., Lead Singer – Sammy Willis, Baritone – Daniel P. Stewart, and Bass – Bishop Harrison.  Bishop is Harrison's first name not his title.  Mr. Willis was replaced by Joe Scott, Jr., who was eventually replaced by Floyd Heard.  The song we featured on the May broadcast was "Let The Church Roll On."  It was recorded in 1927.  It is believed to that the original members are actually on this recording.  For a fascinating history of the Thankful Baptist Church, which will give you a deeper appreciation for the name of the group, visit the church's website - Thankful Baptist Church.  By the way, you may find the name of another gospel quartet group in the church history or it could be the name of group before it became The Thankful Quartette.

This week we spotlight RTG Records.  The label began operation in Bronx, New York, in 1991 by Deacon Shumpret Watts. This label has been the home of groups like Jay Caldwell and The Gospel Ambassadors, The Soul Converters, Lillie Hill Watts, Darrell McFadden and The Fantastic Disciples, and The Hill Sisters.  This label is clearly dedicated to the gospel quartet genre.  In 2005 Deacon Watts moved his operation to Louin, Mississippi.  You can expect a regular serving of good gospel quartet music from RTG Records.

June 10, 2007

The next label we spotlight is located in Fairfield, California.  It is Alpha 7 Ministries.  The label is part of a larger ministry that champion itself as a “Ministry Beyond The Walls.”  It has only two (2) traditional gospel quartet recordings on the label.  One is the best gospel quartet recording, probably of all times, that has been delivered to the marketplace by any label.  And that is, I’m A New Creature by the incredible Sons of The Soul Revivers.  The label re-released the project in 2006 as Live In Fairfield.  For traditional gospel quartet enthusiasts it does not get any better than the Sons of The Soul Revivers.  The label also released Pastor Fleetwood Irving’s God of Chances.  This CD is a testament to Pastor Irving’s traditional gospel roots.  Look for more great gospel quartet recordings from this label in the not to distant future.

June 5, 2007

The first independent label we spotlight is Low Rush Music.  Alvin Lowery is the man behind this label.  According to Mr. Lowery, who is a member of The Lowery Brothers’ quartet group, he has "been in gospel music all of [his] life."  He is dedicated to ensuring the survival and revival of the gospel quartet genre.  In 1984, he started his label with the signing of his family group – The Lowery Brothers.  Some of the other artists on the label during the early days were The Taylor Family from Americus, Georgia, The Soul Stirrers of Chicago, Illinois, and GMS Mass Chorus.

The current lineup of artists includes
The Gospel Imperials, The Gospel Incredibles, The Zionaires, The Veal Brothers, and Leroy Burks and The Connection.  For a complete list of artists on the label visit www.lowrush.com

When it comes to traditional gospel quartet recordings, Low Rush is in the forefront of bringing some of the best unknown artists to the marketplace.  Just listen to "Good Bye World" by
The Gospel Imperials.  Although, they may have been known by many in their home state of Alabama, it was not until they sign with Low Rush that the group began to receive national attention.  Mr. Lowery understands marketing.  He understands that having a good project is not enough and that you have to have a marketing plan that includes the new frontier called the Internet.

We commend Low Rush Music for their commitment to keep gospel quartet music alive.

June is Black Music Month. At least it is the month set aside by the USA to recognize the greatest artists to ever record.  We submit that every month is Black Music Month for the gospel quartet enthusiasts.  Since others will be paying special attention to the music of a people this month, why not take the opportunity to introduce the students in your community to Gospel Quartet Music.  Share the music with your church, your family members, your co-workers, and others that enter your 'space' during this month.  After all, you can always use the excuse that since it is Black Music Month, let me tell you about this music that is the foundation for so many other genre of music.

Expect to see new releases this month coming from Low Rush Music and RTG Records.  As to new releases, have you heard of the group Friendz?  There new CD is on the TOC Records label.  It is entitled Where There’s A Will There’s A Way.  This is a powerful CD.  This CD is further proof that small and independent labels are capable of delivering outstanding projects to the masses.

Two other CDs that deserve your attention are Still Standing. . . Solid As A Rock by The Spiritual Six of Macon, GA.  The CD has a copyright date of 2004.  It has not gotten the attention it deserves.  This CD should have been picked up by a major label.  It is just that good.  Although it is three years old, you will not be disappointed in this CD.  The other CD is the undated “Let’s Have Church” by The Spirit Of Waynesboro.  The title says it all.

Did you know that MALACO had declared the month of February 2007 as National Quartet Month? Coinciding with the celebration of Black History Month, MALACO decided to focus on gospel quartet music in significant manner.  They released a CD titled YES! Quartet. It is a compilation CD with two tracks each from The Pilgrim Jubilees, Spencer Taylor & The Highway QCs, The Jackson Sisters, True Believers, Slim & The Supreme Angels, and The Sensational Nightingales. According to D. A. Johnson of MALACO “Yes! Quartet is the beginning of a campaign [by MALACO] to energize quartet music in the gospel industry.”

As we enter March 2007, we are saddened by the passing of the Legendary Reverend Howard “Slim” Hunt.  However, Slim has only taken a journey that we all eventually will.  So, let your music help prepare the listeners for that journey.  Always edify God with your music.  And let the music speak to those that are lost, troubled or no sure what road to take.  Gospel Quartet Music is a vehicle that should be used to drive folks to Christ not away from our Lord and Savior.  We encourage you to remember this as your minister in song during this month.  And for those that are listeners and not singers, hear the Good News in the songs.

January was truly an exciting month for gospel quartet enthusiasts. Those attending the AGQC had what one attendee described as “a Holy Ghost good time.” We understand that there were many first timers (people who had not attended the AGQC before) this year.

February is the month set aside to “formally” celebrate Black History. Most fans of traditional gospel quartet music actually celebrate Black History every time they play their favorite recording from the past. During this month, take the opportunity to share this aspect of Black History with someone. Tell them about the richness of this music. Tell them about the trails and tribulations the gospel quartet singers from the past had to endure to keep this music alive.

Tell them how
The Caravans, The Swanee Quintet, The Dixie Hummingbirds, The Harmonizing Four, The Fairfield Four, The Swan Silvertones, The Victory Travelers, Clara Ward, The Gospel Harmonettes, and so many others, paved the way for the gospel (no matter what the format) artists of today.  Don’t miss an opportunity to talk about the History.  And, for the groups and singers that will be performing (ministering) this month, why not incorporate a song or two from the pioneers of Gospel Quartet Music into your performance (service).  What a great way to educate (or at least enlighten) your audience.

There are many good gospel quartet CDs that deserve to be in our Top 15.  It was becoming increasingly difficult to "select" just 15 CDs.  Therefore, we have decided to expand the Top 15 to the Top 20.  By visiting the Top 20 Chart page you will see that five groups have returned to the Chart.

Two thousand six was a great year for gospel quartet music.  You, the fans of this genre, did your part by buying the CDs and DVDs, by attending the concerts, and by encouraging others to join the growing number of gospel quartet fans. Yes, we said “growing numbers.” The growth may be slow, but it is steady. There were many conventions, banquets, and gathering of quarteters during the year.  In some areas of the country, like Virginia for instance, quarteters held their first gospel awards program.

More groups are now being exposed to the world through the effective use of the World Wide Web.  Gospel quartet presence on the Internet really mushroomed during 2006. Some of the new websites are Gospel Quartets USA, Mississippi Gospel Quartets, Tennessee Gospel Quartets, Gospel Swap, and Dream Reality Records.  And many groups made the decision to join the World Wide Web with their own website

Also in 2006, a new label came on the scene, Low Rush Music, LLC.  In a very short time this label has established itself as a major player in the Gospel Quartet Music Genre.  Keep an eye on this label for some exciting releases in 2007.  The Gospel Incredibles recently joined this label.

So, we expect 2007 to be an even better year for traditional gospel music. We encourage you to do whatever you can to aid in the growth of the number of fans for Gospel Quartet Music.
